CCS - A way to reduce greenhouse gases in industry Storing carbon dioxide (CO2) underground in an environmentally friendly and permanent way

How can we stop global warming?

How can the various climate agreements and climate targets of countries and governments be adhered to and ultimately achieved?

How can carbon capture and storage technology contribute to achieving the climate targets set worldwide?

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is part of the plan to achieve these ambitious goals. An approach that is particularly suitable for the emissions-intensive process industry.

Goetze is your partner in safety here too.

GOETZE safety valves are involved in all steps from capture to injection of the CO2 into the underground reservoirs. The processes required for this run under overpressure. In the event of failure of controls and regulators, which are responsible, for example, for filling levels, temperatures and, in particular, internal overpressure, the containers and apparatus must be protected by mechanically operating overpressure protection.

CAPTURE - TRANSPORT - STORAGE What is Carbon Capture and Storage?

Since industrial CO2 emissions are largely responsible for raising the temperature of the atmosphere, the CO2 is captured directly from the industrial processes, i.e. at the on-site producer. The CO2 is then liquefied under high pressure so that it can be transported via existing infrastructures, e.g. the rail network, to safe storage facilities.

This approach is particularly suitable for emission-intensive process industries, such as steel, cement, lime, fertilisers, pulp and paper, petrochemicals and waste incineration plants.

A pathway to greenhouse gas reduction in industry in three steps:

Separation

CO2 is captured at source using various technologies:

  • Pre-combustion
  • Oxyfuel combustion
  • Post-combustion
Compression & Transport

CO2 is purified, compressed and transported to the storage facilities via pipelines or in tankers via the rail network.

Storage

CO2 is pumped into porous rock formations for permanent storage.

Carbon Capture and Storage? But safe! With high-performance valves from GOETZE

In addition to safeguarding the overpressure in containers and apparatus, there are additional requirements for the valves and fittings that must be taken into account due to the chemical resistance of the sealing and housing materials used.

Because: CO2 is not just CO2

It depends on whether the CO2 is in a pure dry or moist state, or whether it contains admixtures of other substances. GOETZE can help here with a wide selection of suitable housing and sealing materials.

If the gas is compressed and stored under high pressure, our 492 series safety valve is used.

When selecting the valve, always consider the state of aggregation of the carbon dioxide (solid/viscous/gaseous) as a function of pressure and temperature. For example, CO2 flocculates during blow-off and thus changes its aggregate state from gaseous to solid.

About the 492 series

If the CO2 is liquefied at -56.6°C, our robust and corrosion-resistant cryogenic series are used.
